I’ve Created a Monster

May 28, 2008

Oh boy do I love spinning! I fear I may be going the route of Bockstark Spins ;) and my poor pair of Kate socks will dangle forever on the needles and then my stash will start to hate me from neglect. I love how fast you can whip through a hunk of roving, how time just disappears and all you hear is the whirl of the wheel.

My first attempt was horrible.

My first spool

I pretty much made overspun novelty yarn.

Skeined Up

Then I worked on some roving I dyed with the Crocus Socks colors. That went much better as I pre-drafted a bit more, slowed down my treadling action and changed the drive band thingy to another groove. I did two spools. I want to try plying this weekend.

Round Two - Getting Better

I spun this bobbin yesterday. It’s more roving I dyed up. I did about half the roving hunk. I want to ply this one too.

Round 4

I ordered some roving from Spunky Eclectic. I really didn’t care what it was. I need more stuff to spin! Then Yarn Pirate did an update with roving. Oh how I am enjoying discovering new fiber. I’m noticing there aren’t as many hand dyed roving sites as there are sock yarns. It’s kinda sad in a way. Or are those sites just hiding? Enable me people – help me find some yummy stuff.

The Sweet Sheep stuff is finally up too. Hurray!

heehee! you certainly are headed in the same trajectory! who needs sleep anyways? maybe you can tear yourself away from the wheel awhile and dye some roving? hmmm??? :) it will also “fund” your new habit too!

Try some Crown Mountain Farms – 8oz hunks keep you busy much longer than 4oz hunks. :)

Beautiful first spinning! I love how you can see your improvement from the first bobbin through the third. And your dyed roving is stunning.

Hmmm… enable you… let’s see…. Crown Mountain Farms is a great source for pencil roving – which is super fun and quick and easy to spin. Here’s the link:

They have other stuff, too, of course. But the pencil roving is amazingly fun… here’s my post from when I tried it:

    So much fun!

Great spinning! I got an Ashford Kiwi about a month ago and am avoiding it to finish knitting projects. I plan to get well acquainted this summer though!

As for roving, there are a lot of destashes on Ravelry, try the Spinner’s Marketplace group. I joined the Spunky roving of the month club too. Also, Etsy has M-A-N-Y indie dyers. In particular, check out TheYoYo. I just got some dyed merino roving from her and I want to snuggle with it, it’s soooo soft!!! Ok, now I want to spin but I have my 10 year old’s recorder concert to go to. Summer is right around the corner. Can’t wait to see your yarn plied.
